Invoke

Invoke, a multi-instrumental string quartet made up of University of Maryland School of Music alumni, brings its program “Grown from Roots” to The Clarice at UMD. The ensemble is known for defying easy genre labels, weaving together bluegrass, Appalachian fiddle tunes, jazz, minimalism, and classical traditions into a distinctive contemporary sound. As one producer notes, the group is “not anything but everything,” seamlessly merging classical, folk, bluegrass, and Americana into a single musical voice. “Grown from Roots” examines how roots music shaped the string quartet tradition, pairing works by canonical composers with original pieces composed by and for the group. The program features Franz Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet in C Major, Op. 20, No. 2; Invoke’s own “Sunwalker”; William Grant Still’s “The Jovial One” from Lyric Quartet; Maurice Ravel’s “Assez vif–très rythmé” from his String Quartet; the “Finale: Presto” from Florence Price’s Symphony No. 1, arranged by Mitze; and select originals by Invoke.

Tickets: Regular admission is $35 plus a $5 booking fee. Students and youth tickets are $15.

Venue: Gildenhorn Recital Hall, The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center.
