The R&B Club Discusses Protest R&B
The R&B Club’s “Protest R&B” gathering examines how R&B and related music have voiced resistance, liberation, and demands for justice. The discussion and listening-focused program spans music from before the Civil Rights Movement through the present, including landmark protest songs and Marvin Gaye’s *What’s Going On* album.
Presented in a musical book-club-style format, the event places songs such as “Strange Fruit,” “Mississippi Goddamn,” “People Get Ready,” “Say It Loud,” and “You Haven’t Done Nothin’” in the broader history of protest music. The R&B Club is a cultural gathering founded in 2018 to explore R&B’s influence and meaning.
