Featuring: Southern Culture on the Skids

Southern Culture on the Skids brings its long-running blend of rock and roll, surf, folk, country, and garage music to Union Stage. Known for high-energy performances that turn foot-stomping and dancing into a full-scale rock-and-roll party, the band has been recording and touring internationally since 1983.

The group has performed everywhere from North Carolina house parties and correctional facilities to Japanese venues and late-night television, and has shared stages with artists including Link Wray, Loretta Lynn, Hasil Adkins, and Patti Smith. Their music has appeared in films and television, been parodied by “Weird Al” Yankovic, and was recognized in a 2014 exhibition at the University of North Carolina’s Southern Folklife Collection.

When: September 25, 2026

Venue: Union Stage, 740 Water Street SW, Washington, DC 20024

Lineup: Rick Miller on guitar and vocals, Mary Huff on bass and vocals, and Dave Hartman on drums. The three members have performed together for more than 30 years.

Music: The band’s sound combines rock and roll, surf, folk, country, and garage influences in what Miller describes as “wobbly Americana.”

Recent album: The band’s latest full-length album, *At Home with Southern Culture on the Skids*, was released in March 2021. Recorded largely in Miller’s living room during the pandemic, the 11-track album includes the garage-influenced single “Run Baby Run,” featuring an urgent vocal from Huff, along with additional recording completed at Miller’s Kudzu Ranch studio.

Live-show note: The performance is presented as a high-energy, “hell-raising” rock-and-roll experience.
