Southern Culture on the Skids
Union Stage presents Southern Culture on the Skids for a free one-night concert on Friday, September 25, 2026. The North Carolina-based rock band has been recording and touring worldwide since 1983, and the core trio of Rick Miller, Mary Huff, and Dave Hartman has performed together for more than three decades. Their live shows are known as high-energy, foot-stomping rock and roll celebrations; Rolling Stone has described the band’s concerts as a hell-raising rock and roll party. Over the years, the group has played everywhere from North Carolina house parties and correctional facilities to late-night television programs such as Conan O’Brien and The Tonight Show, and has performed in Japan near Mount Fuji. They have shared stages with Link Wray, Loretta Lynn, Hasil Adkins, and Patti Smith, and their music has appeared in movies and television, been parodied by Weird Al, and been used in commercials for products ranging from diamonds to pork sausage. In 2014, the Southern Folklife Collection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill honored the band with an exhibition about their music and cultural contributions.
During the pandemic stay-at-home period, the band recorded a new album titled At Home with Southern Culture on the Skids, released in full in March 2021. The 11 tracks were recorded and mixed in Rick Miller’s living room, with additional material cut at his studio, the Kudzu Ranch. The first radio single, “Run Baby Run,” is a fast, garage-rock-flavored track driven by Mary Huff’s urgent vocal performance and heavy fuzz guitar. The rest of the album mixes the band’s usual blend of rock and roll, surf, folk, and country, often with more acoustic guitar than their earlier records; Miller has described the sound as a deliberately off-center “wobbly Americana.”
