Introduction to Tabletop Letterpress

This one-day, in-studio workshop introduces participants to the fundamentals of letterpress printing using antique lead type on a Chandler & Price Pilot tabletop platen press. Under the guidance of instructor Jim Modrick, students learn how to set lead type, operate the press, troubleshoot common issues, and perform cleaning and maintenance—knowledge that serves as a foundation for anyone considering owning a small press at home. Each participant will handset a short phrase of their own choosing and print a small edition of ten to fifteen prints. The session is designed for beginners with no prior experience, and registration closes on July 13, 2026.

When: Sunday, July 19, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Venue: Letterpress Studio (in-studio workshop)

Price: $173.00 (includes a $10 materials fee for consumable supplies provided in class; additional optional items may be brought from home)

Instructor: Jim Modrick, an experienced letterpress printer and ArtGym member at Pyramid Atlantic who also works in screenprinting, drawing, and oil painting.

Level: Beginner – no previous experience required.

Registration: Closes July 13, 2026. Tickets are no longer available through the online system.

Materials provided: Consumable supplies covered by the $10 materials fee.

Optional items to bring: Personal apron (extras available) or clothes that can get inky, pen and paper for notes, a few ideas for a short phrase or saying to typeset and print. Comfortable closed-toed shoes are recommended, as participants will be on their feet most of the day. For safety, short sleeves and tied-back long hair are also advised.

Participant feedback: Previous attendees have reported learning everything from setting type to cleaning the machine, and have gone from totally uninitiated to producing beautiful art in under three hours.
