Ruminations: Our Stories In Paper
RUMINATIONS: Our Stories IN PAPER is a group exhibition curated around the creative and material possibilities of papermaking, presented by Helen C. Frederick at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center. The exhibition commemorates two ten-year milestones: Pyramid Atlantic’s tenth year in Hyattsville, Maryland, and the tenth anniversary of Reading Road Studio, the papermaking studio Frederick founded in 2016.
The exhibition includes life-size paper-cast doors finished with gold leaf, a translucent installation focused on endangered species, printed Chinese papers, custom paper drawings, large-scale pulp paintings, artist books, and other works. It explores paper as an active artistic collaborator, emphasizing processes such as fiber behavior, water flow, pigment absorption, casting, mixed-media printmaking, and large-scale installation.

Background: Helen C. Frederick founded Pyramid Atlantic in 1981 and opened Reading Road Studio in Silver Spring, Maryland, in 2016. The studio provides a collaborative setting for artists working with paper, artist books, print media, installations, and visual and cultural literacy. Its practice treats hand papermaking as an art form and investigates translucent paper, mixed-media printmaking, and painterly or dimensional techniques.
