Noli Timere (Be Not Afraid)

Noli Timere (Be Not Afraid) is an aerial performance that brings contemporary dance, avant-garde circus, sculptural installation, and engineering together. Conceived by Guggenheim Award-winning choreographer Rebecca Lazier with renowned sculptor Janet Echelman, the work features eight multidisciplinary performers moving across and through a custom net sculpture suspended as high as 25 feet. The sculpture and performers continually alter one another, creating an evolving relationship between movement and form.

Presented in partnership with Tephra Institute of Contemporary Art, the performance accompanies Janet Echelman: Radical Softness, an exhibition on view in Reston, Virginia. The event includes an original score by French Canadian composer and cellist Jorane, whose music blends cello and vocals with rock, folk, classical, and ambient influences. Jorane has released eight studio albums and created music for films, dance projects, and symphony performances; her collaborators have included the Orchestre Métropolitain, I Musici, Margie Gillis, Michael Brook, and Sarah McLachlan.
