Nathan Salsburg / Sam Wenc / Amadou Kouyate
Outside Time presents an evening bringing together three distinctive musical voices: fingerstyle guitarist Nathan Salsburg, interdisciplinary sound artist Sam Wenc, and Washington, DC–based Manding musician Amadou Kouyate. Their performances span acoustic guitar, experimental sound, and West African-rooted traditions.
Salsburg is known for intricate, highly individual fingerstyle guitar shaped by minimalism, rural American music, and British folk revival. Wenc works across sound, text, performance, and installation. Kouyate performs on djembe, koutiro, and the 21-string kora, drawing on the Manding musical lineage in which he was raised and trained.

Nathan Salsburg: Salsburg has released eight solo albums since 2011 and has developed a style informed by minimalism, rural American vernacular music, and British folk revivalists including Dick Gaughan, Dolly Collins, and Nic Jones. He frequently collaborates with singer-songwriter Joan Shelley and multi-instrumentalist James Elkington. For 30 years, he curated the digital Alan Lomax Archive.
Sam Wenc: Wenc is a composer, improviser, and interdisciplinary artist whose work incorporates sound, writing, performance, and installation. His releases have appeared on Longform Editions, Where to Now, Moone Records, Noumenal Loom, Sweet Wreath, and his own Lobby Art Editions label, which he co-founded to support artists working across genre and media. His work has received support from organizations and programs including Elektronmusikstudion in Stockholm, Art OMI, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, Roulette Intermedium, Casa Del Lago/Cultura UNAM, Sonidos Primeros, Creative Alliance of Philadelphia, and Kiosk Gallery in Chicago.
Amadou Kouyate: A Washington, DC performer and the 150th generation of the Kouyate lineage, Kouyate has studied and performed Manding music since he was three years old. He is a djembe and koutiro drummer and plays the 21-string kora, which he first learned from his father, Djimo Kouyate, and other master diali, the oral historians and musicians of the Manding tradition. His performance history includes the Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian Institution, festivals in England and Brazil, and the Lowell, East-Lansing, and Dayton National Folk Festivals. He has collaborated with Sweet Honey in the Rock at Carnegie Hall and performed at the Victoria World Rhythm Festival.
