American Winners: Athletes and Entertainers Who Shaped the Nation celebrates the athletes and entertainers whose accomplishments, perseverance, and creative contributions have influenced the American experience. The exhibition features more than fifty works from the National Portrait Gallery’s permanent collection, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, and photographs.

The portraits highlight individuals who broke records, defied expectations, captivated audiences, represented the United States abroad, performed for troops, and challenged racial and gender barriers. Together, their stories explore the national character, shared humanity, and the passion, determination, and hard work behind achievement, including the moments when these figures were not in the spotlight.
