What Happens to a Dream Deferred? America at Its 250th is an exhibition presented by The DC Arts Center’s Curatorial Initiative that brings together three women artists—Holly Harris, Maske Maiden, and Linda Obobaifo—to explore the complexity of American identity and the state of the American dream as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary. The exhibition takes its title from the first lines of Langston Hughes’s poem “Harlem,” asking what happens when dreams are deferred, and features works in oil painting, linocut printmaking, sculptural and collaged paintings, and masks. Curated by Thu Anh Nguyen, the show presents a range of perspectives on the promises and failures of American life, inviting viewers to interrogate, challenge, and reimagine what it means to dream in America.

When: April 10 through May 2, 2026. The gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Opening Celebration: Friday, April 10, 2026, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

Artist Talk: Sunday, April 19, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Curatorial Tour & Closing Reception: Saturday, May 2, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Featured Artists: Holly Harris (oil painter and printmaker, works in colorful paintings and black-and-white linocut reliefs addressing war and violence); Maske Maiden (creates masks and kelp‑forest installations that explore mythic storytelling and multiple American identities); Linda Obobaifo (mixed‑media painter and poet whose works use lace, fabric, and blurring to examine concealment, memory, and domesticity).

Curator: Thu Anh Nguyen, a poet and Vietnamese American immigrant whose curatorial statement reflects on the language of the American dream.

Price: General admission pricing is not listed; selected artworks are offered for purchase, including Holly Harris’s *Spider* (2024, linocut relief, 12" x 15" x 0.75" framed) for $100 and Maske Maiden’s *Jaro* (2022, mixed‑media mask, 23.5" x 16.5" x 10") for $2000.
