Behind the Mask: Invisible Life — The Musical is a world-premiere stage adaptation of E. Lynn Harris’s groundbreaking novel, presented as a Friendsgiving celebration at Washington, D.C.’s historic Howard Theatre. With an original score by Ashford & Simpson, the production explores love, identity, faith, sexuality, chosen family, and the consequences of secrecy during the HIV/AIDS crisis.

The story follows Raymond Tyler Jr., a promising young attorney from Birmingham who struggles against the life others expect him to lead. After an encounter with football star Kelvin Ellis changes his understanding of love and desire, Raymond moves to late-1980s New York City, where he finds a chosen family and becomes involved with Nicole Springer, a glamorous Broadway performer. When Kelvin returns, Raymond must confront the divisions he has created between love, family, faith, and his carefully maintained public identity. The musical combines R&B, gospel, soul, and house music with romance, humor, sensuality, heartbreak, and hope in a celebration of Black LGBTQ+ life and resilience.
