Family Day: Building the Next 150 Years
Bring the whole family to the Capital Jewish Museum on July 5, 2026, for a special day of hands-on learning and creativity marking both America’s 250th birthday and the museum’s 150th anniversary. Presented in partnership with the National Building Museum and PJ Library, this free drop-in event invites visitors to explore the past, build on the present, and imagine the future through a wide range of activities designed for children ages 5 to 13.
When: Sunday, July 5, 2026, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.
Venue: Capital Jewish Museum, 575 3rd Street, NW, Washington, DC.
Tickets: Free, but registration is required. Register in advance at the museum’s website.
Ages: Families of all ages and backgrounds are welcome; best appreciated by children between the ages of 5 and 13.
Activities: Drop in any time between 11 am and 3 pm to enjoy tactile learning and play in a pop‑up Hands On Room using the brand‑new Brodie‑Brill Education Collection; build with vintage Legos, Lincoln Logs, and other architecture‑themed pieces from the National Building Museum’s Auxiliary Collection; discover new lobby displays featuring stories of Jewish Washington from 1876, 1926, and 1976; participate in a scavenger hunt that helps young learners explore Jewish life in Washington and reflect on changes over the past 150 years (prizes for completed hunts); make art and write reflections for the museum’s 2076 Time Capsule Project; enter the Slogans and Stickers contest to have your quips featured on new Gewirz Museum Shop merchandise; snap a family picture in the Commemorative Photobooth and then use craft supplies to create a custom frame or scrapbook page so future generations can learn about 2026; explore the museum’s Map Table and add memories, hopes, and ideas to the National Building Museum’s collaborative Future Cities Initiative; visit a cozy Book Nook led by PJ Library with books for all ages about Jewish American history, community, and values; enjoy outdoor activities including sidewalk chalk, hula hoops, and bubbles on the third‑floor terrace (weather permitting).
Note: This event is presented in partnership with the National Building Museum and PJ Library. The museum also recommends the related special exhibition “America250 at the Capital Jewish Museum” (June 9, 2026 – ongoing), which is a separate exhibition but complements the Family Day theme.
