Maria Grand Quartet

The Maria Grand Quartet brings together saxophonist and vocalist Maria Grand with bassist Gervis Myles, percussionist Shakoor Hakeem, and drummer Eliza Salem. Grand’s compositions draw on free improvisation, rhythm, poems, stories, songs, and spontaneous interaction, creating music that moves between raw intensity, sparse reflection, and collective ritual.

The ensemble’s sound is rooted in Grand’s New York musical background and her intention to honor the continuum of Black music often associated with jazz. The performance emphasizes presence, vulnerability, and connection, treating sound as a way to help performers and listeners navigate the complexities of contemporary life. The quartet’s new album, *Both Sides*, is released by Lilaila Records.
