50 for 50: Michele Banks
50 for 50: Michele Banks presents Banks’s *Forces of Nature* series at Touchstone Gallery. The exhibition examines invisible forces that shape the world, drawing on concepts from physics, biology, and neuroscience. Banks’s ink-on-Yupo paintings combine geometric forms, expressive splashes, brain imagery, and fragmented text to explore subjects including atomic motion, the curvature of space, thought, memory, and perception. The work brings warmth and an organic sensibility to scientific ideas while emphasizing the fluid behavior of ink and the artist’s hand.
The exhibition is part of *50 for 50*, a Touchstone Gallery initiative inviting 50 community artists to exhibit during 2026, the gallery’s 50th anniversary year. Banks is a Washington, DC-based painter whose science-inspired work addresses neuroscience, the microbiome, climate change, and related topics. Her art has been shown at the National Institutes of Health, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society for Microbiology, galleries, and art festivals. Her paintings have appeared on journal and book covers and in publications including *Scientific American*, *The Scientist*, and *Wired*. She has also collaborated with scientists through artist residencies in Finland and Paris.
