An Evening with The Nighthawks
An Evening with The Nighthawks features the Washington, D.C.-rooted band founded by Mark Wenner. The group’s sound draws on the varied American roots styles that filled Wenner’s early radio listening, combining blues, rhythm and blues, honky-tonk country, doo-wop, gospel, rockabilly, and related traditions.
Wenner conceived the band before he was able to form it, and returned to his hometown in 1972 at age 23 after an apprenticeship with a New York City band. He set out to create a working band centered on American roots music. The Nighthawks emerged from Washington’s long history as a musical crossroads, where influences from across the surrounding states mixed with the city’s blues and R&B scene. Wenner was also inspired by performances at the Howard Theatre, a major venue on the historic Chitlin’ Circuit.
