Introduction to Bookmaking: Basic Structures

This six‑hour, in‑studio workshop at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center introduces essential bookbinding structures and the tools needed to make custom notebooks and journals. Led by book artist and Smithsonian designer Krista Sharp, the session covers sewn pamphlet books, a paper‑wrapped hardcover accordion book, single‑sheet folded structures, and a slim case binding. Participants also get a tour of the bindery, a resource list, and guidance on designing book content to match specific needs. No prior experience is required, and all consumable materials are included in the registration fee.

When: Saturday, August 1, 2026, from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Registration deadline: Extended to July 27, 2026.

Tickets: $190.00 per person, includes a $25.00 materials fee. Tickets are sold out as of the page’s publishing.

Level: Beginner – no previous experience necessary.

Instructor: Krista Sharp, a book artist and award‑winning graphic/web designer at the Smithsonian Institution. She holds an MA in Art and the Book from the Corcoran School of Art and Design (2016) and is a member of the Cherokee Nation. Her work is held in collections including the Art Institute of Chicago’s Flaxman Library, the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian’s Dibner Library.

Materials: The $25.00 materials fee covers PVA glue, thread, and paper provided in class. Students may optionally bring an apron (or wear clothes that can get messy) and a notebook and pen for taking notes.
