CMYK Screenprinting

Sat, Nov 7, 2026 – Sun, Nov 8, 2026at 10:30 AM
4318 Gallatin Street, Hyattsville, MD
$326

CMYK Screenprinting is a two-day intermediate workshop on reproducing color photographs through four-color screenprinting. Participants will separate a photograph into cyan, magenta, yellow, and black layers, create halftone transparencies, expose screens, and use pin-and-tab registration to produce accurately aligned prints. The class also explores experimental approaches, including changing the layer order, masking sections to create monotypes, and adjusting ink colors to produce different results.

Students will work from their own high-resolution color photograph and learn how to create both a faithful reproduction and more varied, manipulated editions. The workshop is taught by Beth Hansen, a Washington, DC-based screenprinter known for experimental, non-linear screenprinting.

When: November 7–8

Showtimes: 10:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. each day

Venue: Pyramid Atlantic Art Center

Tickets: $326

Registration: Registration closes November 2, 2026.

Level: Intermediate. Completion of a six-hour introductory screenprinting course on paper or fabric, or comparable experience, is required.

Workshop Content: The class covers preparing a color photograph, separating it into cyan, magenta, yellow, and black layers, setting halftones, printing digital stencils onto transparency, exposing screens, preparing paper for precision registration, and printing the four color layers. Participants will also experiment with layer order, masking, monotype effects, and ink-color adjustments.

Materials Included: Registration includes a $100 materials fee covering ink, paper, and two new 23-by-31-inch screens, which students may keep.

Materials to Bring: Students must provide a high-resolution digital color photograph. Photographs will be collected one week before class so the instructor can review them and help troubleshoot. A notebook and writing utensil, a personal apron or clothing suitable for getting ink on, and a laptop with Photoshop are optional. A laptop can be used for digital preparation with instructor guidance, and extra aprons are available.

Instructor: Beth Hansen is a Corcoran College of Art + Design alumna who has printed in Washington, DC, for 20 years. Her practice emphasizes experimentation and manipulating the printed surface to create varied editions rather than replicating a single design. She has taught and created collaborative prints with organizations including the American Art Museum, the National Gallery, and Shop Made in DC. Her work is available at bethhansenart.com.
