Afrocidade

Afrocidade is an original performance connecting Washington, D.C., with Salvador, Bahia, through music, singing, dance, and storytelling. The production explores the shared cultural history of these places and traces the growth of Black consciousness in Salvador, beginning with the Samba ensemble Ilê Aiyê in 1974 and continuing to the present.

A 10-member ensemble of musicians, vocalists, dancers, and narrators performs music associated with prominent Bahian artists including Gilberto Gil, Olodum, Caetano Veloso, and Luedji Luna. Blending concert, theater, and cultural storytelling, the performance serves as a bridge between histories and communities, honors ancestry, highlights overlooked history, and looks toward a more empathetic future.
