Haenyeo: The Breath of Jeju (Special Exhibition)

Haenyeo: The Breath of Jeju is a special exhibition about Jeju Island’s haenyeo, the renowned women free divers whose lives, diving traditions, and close-knit communities are deeply connected to the sea. The exhibition examines their distinctive practice of muljil, sustainable relationship with the marine environment, and the way knowledge and traditions are passed between generations.

Organized by the Korean Cultural Center Washington, D.C., in collaboration with Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, the exhibition includes authentic diving suits and equipment, informational displays, videos, books, and hands-on activities. Haenyeo culture was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016.
