The Last Bison

Thu, Dec 10, 2026at 8:00 PM
227 Maple Avenue East, Vienna, VA 22180
Free
Featuring: The Last Bison

The Last Bison is a Virginia folk-rock band known for combining Southern roots music with classical-influenced arrangements, layered harmonies, and a broad acoustic and electric instrumental palette. Emerging from southeastern Virginia, the group developed a sound that moves from intimate chamber folk to more expansive, anthemic rock, with influences often compared to Mumford & Sons, The Decemberists, and Fleet Foxes.

The band’s music has evolved across its albums Quill, Inheritance, VA, and Dorado. Its later work, SÜDA, expands that foundation with world rhythms, atmospheric textures, and larger-scale arrangements. Inspired in part by lead songwriter Ben Hardesty’s childhood years in the rainforests of Bolivia, SÜDA explores longing, memory, spiritual searching, and the desire for emotional release.

When: December 10, 2026.

Showtimes: No performance time is listed in the available event information.

Venue: Jammin Java, 227 Maple Avenue East, Vienna, VA 22180.

Music: The Last Bison’s repertoire blends folk-rock, chamber-folk textures, organic percussion, vocal harmonies, electric bass, keyboards, and traditional instruments including banjo, mandolin, guitar, violin, cello, bells, and reed organ.

Background: The group first attracted national attention after releasing its debut album, Quill, independently in 2011. It subsequently signed with Universal Republic Records and released Inheritance in 2013 before returning to an independent approach for the 2014 album VA and the EP Dorado.

Recording history: VA was created in a rustic cabin called the Wigwam near Virginia’s Great Dismal Swamp, where the band built a temporary studio and developed a more energetic sound with prominent organic drums. SÜDA was recorded at Collector Studios in Norfolk, Virginia, during the summer of 2016 after a lineup change and a deliberate effort to make the arrangements more expansive.

Performers: The event page identifies Ben Hardesty as the principal songwriter and vocalist. The band’s documented instrumentation and contributors include Andrew Benfante on piano and previously reed organ; Amos Housworth on bass and formerly cello; Dan Hardesty on banjo, mandolin, and guitar; Annah Housworth on bells and backing vocals; and Teresa Totheroh on violin.

Notable songs: The page discusses “She Always Waves At The Gate,” “Sleep,” “By No Means,” and “Burdens,” songs that reflect the band’s recurring themes of searching, uncertainty, freedom, spiritual discovery, and finding relief from hardship.
