Luminous Layers: Transparent Gel Monotypes

Sat, Nov 21, 2026at 1:00 PM
4318 Gallatin Street, Hyattsville, MD
$152

Luminous Layers: Transparent Gel Monotypes is a one-session workshop focused on creating layered gel-plate monotypes with transparent color. Participants will work with printmaking paper and Golden Open Acrylics, developing images through additive methods such as painting and drawing directly on the plate, as well as reductive methods including wiping, lifting, and masking ink. The class also introduces basic registration techniques for aligning multiple printed layers.

Students will complete a small series of finished prints that can be framed or used in collage and mixed-media work. The workshop welcomes all experience levels; previous experience with gel printing, monotypes, or acrylic painting may be helpful but is not required.

When: November 21

Showtimes: 1:00–5:00 p.m.

Venue: Pyramid Atlantic Art Center

Tickets: $152

Registration deadline: Registration closes November 14, 2026.

Materials: The registration fee includes a $40 materials fee covering consumable supplies provided in class, including paints, ready-made stencils, stencil material, printmaking paper, and necessary tools.

What to bring: Participants may optionally bring a personal apron or wear clothing that can get messy, an 8-by-10-inch-or-smaller gel plate, sketches or reference images, and a notebook or sketchbook. Gel plates will be available for use, and extra aprons will be provided.

Instructor: Clare Winslow is a Maryland-based printmaker whose work explores abstraction, process, and memory through layered, gestural imagery. She studied fine art at The Catholic University of America and printmaking at the Corcoran College of Art. Her practice emphasizes experimental screenprinting and monotype techniques, including methods that translate to gel printing.

Instructor background: Winslow has received the Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County’s Artists & Scholars Project Grant four times and has completed residencies at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and in Orquevaux, France. Her work has been exhibited throughout the Washington, DC region and elsewhere, and she teaches process-oriented classes designed to encourage experimentation and the development of an individual visual language.

Participant experience: Past students have praised Winslow’s practical gel-plate printing guidance, including techniques and best practices that can be difficult to find online, and have expressed interest in returning for additional classes.
