Freedmen’s Bureau Project Transcribe-a-Thon

The Freedmen’s Bureau Project Transcribe-a-Thon marks 10 years of the National Museum of African American History and Culture’s effort to expand access to Freedmen’s Bureau records. Participants will transcribe documents recording the lives of formerly enslaved men, women, and children, helping scholars, genealogists, and communities research the Reconstruction era.

The program welcomes both experienced volunteers and people new to transcription. Attendees will learn about the project, transcription methods, and best practices before contributing to the effort to make these historical records more accessible. Participation is available in person or virtually, and light refreshments will be provided for in-person attendees.
