What Lies Beneath — Chris Chernow, Elizabeth Curren, and Carolee Jakes

What Lies Beneath is a group exhibition that brings together three artists—Chris Chernow, Elizabeth Curren, and Carolee Jakes—each of whom earned a Fine Art degree from the Corcoran College of Art + Design, though in different fields: Book Arts, Painting, and Printmaking. Their works explore the concept of surface and the processes and techniques they use to achieve their desired results. Chris Chernow, a longtime local DC artist, works as an indirect painter, building up multiple layers of paint over several months to evoke emotion in large-format figure paintings on canvas where details are absent, focusing instead on the paint itself and the feelings it generates. Elizabeth Curren, originally from Rhode Island and now based in Bethesda, is a book artist, printmaker, painter, writer, and teacher who incorporates block prints, collagraphs, collage, handmade paper, and ephemera into her artist’s books and narratives. Carolee Jakes, a painter and printmaker from Northern Virginia and founder of Dead Run Studio in McLean, taught Printmaking at Washington Waldorf School from 2015 to 2024; her current work combines printing, painting, and assemblage, building and looking through visual and physical layers. The exhibition is on view at Gallery B in Bethesda.

When: December 5, 2026 through January 4, 2027 (the gallery will be closed December 26–28 for the Christmas holiday).

Showtimes: Fridays and Saturdays from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM, and Sundays from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Opening Reception: Friday, December 12, 2026 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
