Exhibit: Beauty Behind Bars

Beauty Behind Bars is an exhibition of visual art, poetry, and performances by currently incarcerated artists and returning citizens from Washington, D.C. The work reflects on resilience, hope, connection, and the possibility of change, inviting audiences to look beyond prison walls and reconsider the stereotypes and punitive narratives often imposed on incarcerated people.

Curated by formerly incarcerated artists and a public defender, the exhibition emphasizes art’s transformative and restorative power, including its role in sustaining creativity and affirming the humanity of people who have lost their freedom. The collection includes poignant and evocative works shaped by reflection, personal experience, and the search for connection.

When: September 5–27, 2026

Schedule: Viewing and Open Mic Night on September 8 from 6–9 p.m.; Opening Reception on September 12 from 3–5 p.m.; Artist Talk and Art Market on September 19 from 3–5 p.m.; Closing Reception on September 27 from 5–9 p.m.
