Elgar, Tchaikovsky & Strauss

Baltimore Symphony Orchestra music director candidate Daniele Rustioni leads a three-composer program that pairs Romantic-era orchestral showpieces with a beloved cello showcase. The afternoon opens with Elgar’s sun-drenched concert overture *In the South (Alassio)*, then turns to Tchaikovsky’s graceful *Variations on a Rococo Theme*, featuring cellist Johannes Moser. The second half brings two Richard Strauss works: the tone poem *Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks*, full of wit and mischief, and the sweeping 1945 suite from the opera *Der Rosenkavalier*. Curated as a journey through English, Russian, and German musical worlds, the concert moves from reflective warmth to elegance, playfulness, and finally expansive romance.
