DC Arts Events
Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 28, 2026
DC Arts Events is a personalized arts events discovery app for the Washington, DC area. This policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that information. We have written it to be direct and plain — not to obscure anything.
Information We Collect
We collect the minimum information necessary to provide the service. Specifically:
- Account information: Your name and email address, used to create and identify your account.
- Preference signals: Your reactions to events (approvals, rejections, pins, hides), venue and neighborhood selections, and any written preference notes you provide in Settings.
- Taste profile data: Explicit ratings you set for event genres, styles, periods, and formats.
- Device token: A push notification token — provided by Apple on iPhone, and by Firebase Cloud Messaging on Android — used solely to deliver notifications about your event queue. This token is never used for advertising or shared with third parties.
- Android launch list: If you ask to be notified when the Android app is released, we store the email address you enter and the IP address it was submitted from (the latter only to limit abuse of the form). This is separate from any account — you do not need one to join the list, and joining does not create one.
- Usage data: The app version and platform you are running, and a record of your activity in the app — which screens you open, which filters you use, and when — used to diagnose problems and to understand which features are worth keeping.
Near You can use your device’s location to centre the map on you. That location stays on your device — it is never sent to our servers, and we never store it. Beyond the neighborhoods you explicitly select, we do not collect your location. We do not access your contacts, photos, microphone, or camera.
How We Use Your Information
Your information is used exclusively to provide and improve the service for you:
- To personalize your events feed based on your stated and inferred preferences.
- To generate and maintain your taste profile, which shapes which events are surfaced to you.
- To populate your personal calendar subscription with events from your Approved tab.
- To send you transactional emails (account creation, password reset).
- To email you once when the Android app launches, if you joined that list. That list is used for nothing else, and every message to it carries an unsubscribe link.
- To diagnose problems and fix bugs.
AI and Personalization
DC Arts Events uses AI to generate your taste profile and match events against your preferences. Here is exactly how that works with respect to your privacy:
- Your personal information (name, email address) is never sent to any AI system. Identity and personalization are kept entirely separate.
- Your activity and preferences are never used to train any AI model — ours or anyone else's.
- Any written preference notes you enter are used only to refine your results. You can delete them at any time in Settings under Refine Your Preferences.
Sharing and Disclosure
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data. Ever. The app is free and carries no advertising, so your data is not a revenue source for us.
We may share data in the following narrow circumstances only:
- Service providers: We use a small number of infrastructure providers (hosting, email delivery, push notification delivery) who process data solely on our behalf and are contractually prohibited from using it for any other purpose.
- Legal requirements: We will disclose information if required to do so by law or in response to valid legal process, and will notify you if permitted to do so.
- Business transfer: If DC Arts Events is acquired or merged, your data may transfer to the new owner, who would be bound by this policy or required to obtain your consent before material changes.
Your Rights and Choices
You are in control of your data:
- Access and portability: You can view your preference settings and taste profile at any time in the app.
- Correction: You can update your name, email, neighborhoods, venue selections, and written preferences at any time in Settings.
- Deletion: You can delete your preference notes in Settings → Refine Your Preferences. To delete your account and everything associated with it, open Settings → Delete My Account in the app — on iPhone, on Android, or on the web. The deletion is immediate and permanent. If you can no longer sign in, contact us at the address below and we will delete it for you.
- Android launch list: Every email we send to that list carries an unsubscribe link, and you can ask us to remove your address at any time at the contact address below — no account required.
- Preference reset: You can clear your taste profile and start fresh at any time from Settings → Your Taste Profile.
- California and Virginia residents have additional rights under CCPA and VCDPA respectively, including the right to know what personal information is collected, the right to deletion, and the right to opt out of sale (we do not sell data, but you can exercise this right by contacting us).
Data Retention and Security
We retain your account data for as long as your account is active, or as needed to provide the service. The in-app activity records described above are deleted after 180 days. Addresses on the Android launch list are kept only until that launch announcement has been sent, and are deleted within 30 days afterwards unless you have separately created an account.
We use industry-standard security measures including encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest. No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure; we take reasonable precautions but cannot guarantee absolute security.
Children's Privacy
DC Arts Events is not directed at children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
Changes to This Policy
If we make material changes to this policy, we will notify you by email and update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after such notice constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
