Liberation tells the story of two eras separated by fifty years, linked by the unfinished work of feminism. In 1970 Ohio, journalist Lizzie joins a weekly consciousness-raising group of five women who learn to share the truth of their lives, building solidarity and imagining a new future. Decades later, Lizzie’s daughter confronts the same questions her mother faced, turning to the past to understand why change stalled. The play is a messy and audacious examination of solidarity, sacrifice, and the political legacy of the 1970s. Written by Tony Award nominee Bess Wohl and directed by Whitney White, both Tony Award nominees, the production comes to Studio’s intimate Victor Shargai Theatre. It is a co-production with Berkeley Repertory Theatre and Geffen Playhouse and is the winner of the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
